OUR STORY

Founded in 2012 by Karim and Angela Henein, The Smokery evolved from a smoked salmon boutique—rooted in a family legacy dating back to 1986—into a premier upscale restaurant chain.

Now a leading upscale restaurant chain with nine prestigious venues across the country, The Smokery is a pioneer in the restaurant industry. Children Alexandra, Fred, and Joseph Henein have joined the family business, contributing significantly to its growth.

Led by Executive Chef Erwan Laurenceau, The Smokery continually elevates its culinary experience. Celebrating over 10 years of passion with 350 dedicated employees, The Smokery is now setting its sights on global expansion.

Our Origins

Karim Henein founds the first “Salmon Smokery” Bentley’s Egypt in 1986, the first in the Middle East and Africa, becoming Egypt’s leading Smoked Salmon supplier for Hotels by 1990 and eventually launching the “Salmon House” brand in 2000.

The Beginning

Following the revolution in 2011, the first Smoked Salmon boutique opens in an iconic location in Katameya Heights and “THE SMOKERY” is born, organically transforming into an exclusive family dining destination. The menu evolves to include a wider variety, capturing the attention of Orascom Development and EMAAR which initiate The Smokery’s national expansion with two beautiful new restaurants, El Gouna in 2014 and Marassi in 2015.

Growth

During this period, The Smokery enters a new era of growth, launching The Smokery Beach brand in El Gouna and expanding in Cairo with 2 venues East and West, in Heliopolis and Sheikh Zayed. By 2019, the brand had established groundbreaking venues on the North Coast and across the country becoming one of Egypt’s most sought-after lifestyle destinations, constantly adapting and innovating through strategic partnerships, elevating the country’s culinary standards.

Present

Rebirth

The Smokery celebrates more than a decade of hospitality, undergoing major restructuring of the company and upgrading its venues one by one, starting with the flagship, Katameya Heights. In 2024, the group takes it’s first step towards global expansion, with luxury food and beverage projects planned in Oman. The Smokery continues to grow staying true to its roots of excellence in dining and hospitality with more to come.

In 2022, The Smokery proudly welcomed Executive Chef and Kitchen Director Erwan Laurenceau. Renowned in Egypt’s culinary scene, Chef Erwan brings 16 years of experience from The Four Seasons, demonstrating a deep passion for innovation and gastronomy.

At The Smokery, Chef Erwan is building a strong team of young professionals, instilling new skills and fostering a vibrant culture of camaraderie, further elevating the company’s culinary experience.
